CHALLENGE: BUILDING SOLUTIONS FOR ADULT LEARNERS
Nudges to Communicate with Students
Nudging is a process that has, at its core, the desire for a change of behavior with easy, efficient, and cost effective interventions (Singler, 2015). The goal of the nudge is to help the target (in the case of Complete Florida, the adult learner) to commit to a behavior, such as returning to college and continuing onto graduation.
Complete Florida conducts research related to adult students, degree completion, and strategies to help students succeed. As part of the research effort, selected works are annotated to provide partners with resources that might be useful in their own work with students in the degree completion space.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Distance Learning
The role artificial intelligence can play in learning at a distance is broad and varied. Some roles feature prominently in the Learner experience to promote engagement and performance improvement. Others support the Educator to improve efficiency and the most effective use of limited resources.
Marketing to the Adult Learner
The objective behind marketing to the adult learner is to build brand awareness, drive traffic to the website, and increase applications. But, convincing the adult learner that it’s time to finish their degree is not an easy or quick process.
Improving College Affordability with Open Educational Resources (OER)
According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the price of textbooks rose at three times the rate of inflation between 2002 and 20161 bringing the annual cost to about $1,300 per year for a full-time community college student.
Design Implications of the Complete Florida Student Profile
The number of non-traditional, adult students returning to college has increased significantly over the past decade.
Designing Competency-Based Programs for Online Learners
The Innovation Institute through the College of Professional Studies designed a pilot online competency-based Network Systems Operations B.S. program.
Engaging Strategies to Keep Adult Learners Involved in Instruction
Instructional programs for adult learners present special challenges for designers of learning experiences. The complexities of professional and private life can produce levels of distraction difficult for adult learners to overcome. Variability in instructor preparation and delivery can also affect learner performance.
MOOC Development Insights for Designing and Developing Microcredential Experiences
In early 2017, when the UWF Innovation Institute was building its first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), we had a really nice problem to solve. The five faculty members who were to be included in the course had done some incredible research work on the Gulf Coast, each topic highly visual and stimulating.
Role of a Coach in Helping Adults Return to College
Coaching is the core of our work at Complete Florida. Our personal coaches meet students wherever they are in their educational journey to find the best pathway to success for them.
We’re all storytellers. Certainly not everyone would identify themselves as such, but after some thought, it becomes apparent we’re all doing it, all the time. The crazy thing that happened to you at the grocery store that you can’t wait to tell your significant other about?
Evaluating Technology Innovations for Application in Learning
Innovations in technology with potential for application in learning can stimulate considerable interest and excitement; particularly among educators who find themselves on the Early Adopters end of Everett Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Adoption curve.
Value of Research in Solving Complex Problems/Design Thinking
Design thinking is the specialty of the University of West Florida Innovation Institute. We always describe it as a human-centered approach to problem solving.
